SiegfriedMuseum Xanten on 19 November: director Anke Lyttwin gave us a fabulous private guided tour and showed us the museum’s many treasures. There, we not only made acquaintance with another dragon (who gets little to no mention in the original Nibelungenlied but who is omnipresent in modern adaptations), but we also discovered several medieval beasts in Xanten’s Gothic cathedral St Victor. All in all, we learned that medieval (literary) animals such as dragons can have a lasting impact on today's perceptions of the medieval.
